Virus Blog
12/31/20
Finale. As promised, this is the last virus blog post. Much has happened since those first posts, not the least of which the anxiety which caused me to want to write everything down has certainly waned. We are still largely quarantined as we have been since March 11th. There is the occasional public excursion but they are brief and rare. My new car, purchased in August has only been filled up once and has only 600 miles because there is no where to go. We have occasionally seen the boys but only after testing, quarantining and at least some attempt at mask wearing when they first arrive. So far so good. Eve has jury duty on January 11th that she is praying will not happen but that would be the most public either of us has been since March.
As I sit here on New Year's Eve there is much to hate about 2020 and yet much to love. I think the work at home environment has largely been a bonus. I'm sleeping more and wasting significantly less of my day. Work has got some of that time but I've taken back my fair share as well. We were fortunate enough to see Kevin trapped in his parents house and enjoyed our work from home routine where we would meet at 3pm to have lunch together and shout at the TV news. I think overall this forced home time has helped everyone put things into a better perspective. The dog has never been happier and never received more attention. There was certainly a good side.
Death has largely skipped my direct reach. The closest I'm aware of to Covid death was a work colleague's father who sadly died very quickly after a family gathering, but frankly with 1 out 1000 Americans dying from the disease, I'm happy that it hasn't hit closer to home.
The vaccines are here and modern science certainly stepped up. That said, it's the low-technology challenge of getting the vaccine into people's arms that is vexing us today. With fewer than 1% of the country vaccinated after just shy of a month, we appear to be on a long road ahead (by contrast Israel expects to be 25% vaccinated within the first 30 days). No matter. I will wait. I will probably wait long after getting vaccinated before testing to see if I'm part of the 95% or the unlucky 5% that it doesn't work for.
We will have a new leader shortly. We move from a self-interested disaster to a caring man of the people. I trust that we'll see the direct benefit of this change in 2021.
2020 was a year like no other. I'm confident that I learned more in 2020 than I suffered and that's got to be a good thing in anyone's book.
Updates. While I have no intention of continuing this blog, I recognize that I may wan to offer perspective from time to time as we move forward. I plan to list those below should they happen. For now the space is left blank.
