Holiday Cards
My favorite tradition during the holiday season, without question, is the exchange of holiday cards. If I look back over my life I'm saddened by how quickly we seem to lose touch with people we were once close to. The holiday card, it seems, is te thin thread that still holds the relationship together after all these years. Now I'm particular when it comes to holiday cards. I love getting the annual family photo. I don't like the hodge podge collection of bad photos, but the one or two money shots from the past year. And while I would never dream of sending out the "annual letter" (I do enough of that here), I love to read and laugh at their one-sidedness. I admit to being disappointed by the cards with a note and no photo.
I sent out 120 cards this year. With a computerized mailing list, an interent connection to the photo lab and some good old fashion mailroom work (how I started my business career), I was able to punch out the 120 cards in the mail in just a couple of hours while watching TV. Unfortunately my return on investment was modest. I think I only got one card for every five I sent.
They say that this is the season of giving. Allow me a moment of selfishness when I say I wish I had received more cards this year.
