The New Conservative Republican
California Proposition 85 (on the November 2006 ballot), if passed, would create a mandatory waiting period and parental notification before a pregnant minor could terminate a pregnancy. I got a call tonight from an automated calling machine that wanted 45 seconds of time (another job outsourced to technology). The survey wanted to know how I would vote on Prop 85. I said "no" in my crankiest tone. I wonder if that computer was clever enough to record that as strong "no?" Then I was asked if Tom McClintock (Republican for Lt. Governor) supported 85 would I be more inclined to vote for him. Hmm, poor Tom isn't sure if he should support it or not and I guess he needed some help from a good liberal.
"No," I said speaking with great force. I was then asked if I was a Republican. Answer: "YES" and if I considered myself a "conservative republican" and again I answered "yes." These final affirmative responses were answered with a smirk in my voice. I was fooling poor Tom who later identified that he had paid the robot to call me. I messed with poor Tom who is now searching for a new way to appeal to his conservative base. If he calls me back I'll tell him that all conservative republicans in these here parts are looking for more funding for education, universal healthcare and steep taxes on fossil fuels to spur the development of green energy. I'll tell Tom that we're done with the abortion issue, could care less if gay people want to marry and want the government to protect our civil rights above all else.
Conservative Republicans are voting against 85 and not voting for Tom McClintock.
